Pre-Testing Results of the Top Ten Expert Advisors"Past performance does not a guarantee of future profits" - this is a standard warning for investment companies that offer money management services. The ATC 2008 is a very vivid confirmation of this warning - Expert Advisors of all Participants (except for multi-currency ones) went through pre-tests in MetaTrader 4 terminal before the Championship start, but most of them never got to the finish. Each year before the Championship start the Forum visitors start discussing Expert Advisors developed for the contest. We surveyed the opinion of developers in our Forum before the Championship start. EA developers consider that only a trading strategy that is profitable on history can challenge for the prize in the contest that is conducted during three months in the real-time mode. They publish screenshots of terminal tester reports displaying the up-going balance line of Participants. But only time can show whether the same growing balance chart will be achieved in the Championship. Almost three months have passed since the ATC 2008 start. Only one day is over till the competition end. During the Championship various Expert Advisors appeared on the leading positions. But now only four Expert Advisors have chances to win prizes: Liliput, PrizmaL, abeiks and Gorez. We decided to see what the results of these Participants' Expert Advisors were during pre-testing. All reports from MetaTrader 4 terminal tester were saved and equities of these four Participants were restored using back engineering in testing on the period of 8 months - from 01.01.2008 to 20.08.2008. Swaps were not taken into account. Obtained calculations of equity lines of each EA were displayed as an indicator on a visual testing chart by an EA that was written in MQL4 specially for these purposes. Have a look at the video displaying the competition of the current Championship leaders on history. You can see in your own eyes how the virtual struggle between them developed during the preliminary checks for the Championship. The graph below represents the results of these Expert Advisors after the three months of the Championship:

I think that anyway everyone expected those 4 EAs to have quite good performances in backtesting prior to start of ATC.
IMO would be more interesting to see backtesting results on the period of ATC: 01/10/08 - 26/12/08.
This could show the difference between the real behavior of the EAs and the behavior simulated by the Strategy Tester.
