Interview with Nikolay (zonа)

Nikolay known as zonа has not been trading forex for a very long time. However, he has already developed about 30 Expert Advisors. His EA named WholeSight has made only one profitable trade yet. Nikolay supposes his Expert Advisor to perform about fifteen trades during the entire period of the Championship.

Hello, Nikolay. Tell us, please, about your experience in trading at Forex market. How long have you been concerned with trading?
Well, I have been concerned with trading since early 2005. At that time, I tested myself using only demo accounts. I decided to open a real account only after six months. I had traded manually on a real account for another half a year and then decided to put the whole work at the mercy of Expert Advisors.

Do you trade successfully on the real account?
For the time being, yes, I do. However, I’ve already “throttled down”. When I was a newbie, I succeeded very well. As for now, I think the experience tells on my results. Well, my volumes and deposits grew. So did the risk

Why did you decide “to put the whole work at the mercy of Expert Advisors”?
A computer makes decisions without any hesitations and much sooner than a man. Well, one does not become conscience-stricken if the deposit is depleted, in case the Expert Advisor is unsuccessful. An EA is, of course, tested on a demo account and then tries to trade using real quotes.

Tell us about your MQL4 developments, please.
I started to feel interest in MQL when there was still the 3rd version of it. I wrote the simplest Expert Advisors in it. Then I completely turned to MQL4 after version 4 had appeared. I wrote totally about 20 or 30 EAs. I also like to write scripts since they are executed independently on the tick, unlike Expert Advisors. I have never been especially engaged in writing indicators, though.

Do you develop any Expert Advisors for sale?
Yes, there is a couple of Expert Advisors of this kind. However, I prefer to write them for myself and for my friends. For free.

Your start was excellent. Let us talk about your Expert Advisor participating in the Championship. There is a phrase in its description: “The Expert Advisor uses analysis of how one currency pair stands related to another pair.” Is it a multicurrency EA?
The Expert Advisor only analyses the exchange rates of other currencies, but it trades on only one pair. I mean, it performs analysis, something like GBP=F(USD,EUR,JPY,CHF), USD=F(GBP,EUR,JPY,CHF), and then makes assumptions about where the events may go further. I’m inclined to consider the fact that it has excellently started for a piece of luck plus the result of trading with large volumes. Its minimal task is not to show a loss, whereas its maximal r\task is to remain in the top.

Give us, please, more details about its principles of operations. What is the exact way you analyze those currencies in?
Rates of light MAs are analyzed. Then the Expert Advisor decides using a heavy MA (period of 300) whether it will open a long or a short position. In general, it trades against the heavy MA’s direction trying to catch the most extreme pivot point. Basically, it succeeded with that on the 1st of October.

Why has your EA set a TP as 420 points? Do you think it will reach such a level? Or are there some position closing mechanisms, other than SL, in the code?
The Expert Advisor is meant for strong movements. That made me set such a high TP. Moreover, the profit is trailed with a large step and only after the H4 candlestick has been formed. Basically, the profit of 420 points will be seldom reached, of course. Besides, an opposite signal will income at a certain moment. Thus, it will fix profits by locking.

What were this Expert Advisor’s test results?
The profit made $63 000 when tested on your historical data. From 2007.01 to 2007.09, if I’m not mistaken.

Did you assume our last-year Participants' EAs as a basis for yours?
Yes, of course, I did. It was their profit, I was aiming at. I think there is something in my Expert Advisor of Sashken’s. It opens against MA, too.

Which of the considered strategies seems to you to be the most profitable and stable one?
I Well, of course, that one the profit of which did not vary within a too wide range. It seems to me, the system of RobinHood was something like this and that of one of Belarusian Participants if my memory does not fail me.

Do you think this present Championship will differ from the previous one? And in what?
Well, it was different even on the first day. There are many who chose high risk in the hope of winning. There are much more developers this time. Just look at the German programmer in the Top Three!

Whom do you suppose to be your main competitor in the struggle for the prize?
It’s still difficult to say who is one’s friend and who is one’s competitor. The show has just begun. Many Expert Advisors have not even started to trade yet. So there is time for everything. We’ll see.

How do you estimate your chances to win?
I would not say I stand to win. My Expert Advisor will make about 15 trades during the contest period. I mean, not many trades. And it’s not a fact that all trades will be profitable. This is why I will be satisfied it I just remain at page 1 of the rating.

In case you still win the first prize, how will you use it, if it is not a secret?
Well, it is better not to divide up the bearskin before the bear is shot, as they say. We’ll see.

Thank you for your interview.

Did your friends enter these experts? Did you compile them on the same computer, and have they been excluded from the competition because of that?
