Interview with Ilia Antonov (Via)

Ilya Antonov (Via) has been trading for about two years. He tried to trade manually, but not really successfully. He started to learn about automated trading approximately six months ago. At the end of the sixth week, Ilia's Expert Advisor has taken the third place without any losing trades.

What future is reserved for automated trading, in your opinion? What do you suppose to be its advantages?
I think, it will have a great future. Its advantages are simple: it delivers traders from the necessity of continuous watching the market - this is very important for me. It also excludes some psychological forces and it strictly follows the selected strategy. I think it would be most effective to use automated trading as the basis for trading in some situations, but still attended by trader. Well, I would like to fully entrust an automated system with a task to trade. This would be just ideal.

But automated trading has its specific disadvantages, well known by all. First, it is rather difficult to create a system that would work perfectly on different market trends and providing necessary profitability and risks. Second, it is sometimes psychologically difficult to absolutely trust in an automated system, especially when operating significant amounts of money. This is not the problem of such systems, though, it is the problem of our relation to them.

Why did you call your Expert Advisor 'Mover', what does it mean for you?
This is just the first association of how I see its primordial principle. The name comes from English "to move". Mover is someone or something that moves, drives, actuates.

Your Expert Advisor steadily advances and increases its profits without any losing trades at all. This is impressive. Could you tell a bit more about your Expert Advisor?
The Expert opens positions when the channel borders are overrun. It is aimed at protection of small profits. The initial idea was to achieve practically break-even trading (in terms of the account balance).

You are not having any losing trades as of now. What are your Expert Advisor test results? Were there any losing positions in testing?
Well, I managed to get a rather good version of the Expert Advisor at the stage of preparations for the Championship. The Championship is the first test of the Expert in real. Actually, it is difficult to judge about a trading system by tests. Thus, on my tests, I got average monthly profitability of 30%. This was what I was geared to, but it turns to be something other in real. Well, it is really difficult to judge. As to losses, testing did not show any last months.

Your Expert Advisor increases the amount of lots in the position continuously. Does this mean that you think it to be necessary to increase volumes when gaining profits? Are not you afraid of possible losses?
I think that, if the Expert works ok and we agree with its risks, the amount of lots may and must be increased in order to maximize profits. If the trade volume is fixed, it means that we hope for the Expert's good work at the beginning, but do not think of what comes later... I don't think this is reasonable.

What do you think about well-thought-out money management? Is it a recipe for success in implementation of an automated trading system? Is it a necessary component of an automated trading system or could one do without it?
Frankly speaking, the collocation of "money management" associates me to something complicated. Of course, one has to be well aware of what one does, have a good grasp of risks and their reasons. This is necessary. Otherwise, it is just a game for Strategy Tester.

You use EURUSD like the most Participants. Why did you choose this particular symbol?
The Expert was initially developed for USDCHF, but then it turned to show better results on EURUSD. Well, I just did not have enough time to test it on other currency pairs.

What is your ratio between SL and TP? Hendrick, for instance, uses 2:1. What about you?
My positions are basically closed by SL since I use Trailing Stop and it is next to impossible that they reach the TP level. So it is rather difficult to say about a precise ratio, but my initial SL value exceeds that of TP, too.

After having analyzed your Expert Advisor performance on the Championship, what would you change in it?
I changed much in my Expert Advisor after I had submitted it for participation in the Championship. As a matter of fact, it does not resemble the initial version very much. I improved entering criteria and made some other changes. As a result, I managed to achieve rather good work of the Expert with the reduced risks and partially increased profitability. These are only test results, though.

Will you use Mover in real trading for it has really impressive results? Especially as you have reduced risks even more…
Yes, I am planning to try it on a small amount of money in the nearest future. If everything is ok and the dynamics is confirmed, I will think of more serious use.

After the Championship has been over, will you put your Expert Advisor on open access? Or did you think of commercial distribution of your Expert?
I have not made a decision yet. I will possibly put the initial version on open access. But if it turns to be really so good as it seems to be now, I will perhaps distribute it commercially, why not? This is one of purposes of its development, isn't it? I must confess I admire Hendrick's decision to open his Expert Advisor for public since his system is really good.

Will you participate in the next Championship?
Of course, I will. It would be great if it takes place more often.

Who of the current leaders will have found the way in the Top Three by the 25th of December, in your opinion?
Generally speaking, it is a loaded question. There are some Experts, rather good ones that are competing for prize places at the moment. But let's not make premature plans. I can name Hendrick - his Expert is rather good - and, perhaps, Sashken, although his Expert Adviser is very risky..

Anyway, I wish success and good luck to all Participants!

Thank you very much, Ilya. We wish you lots of luck in the Championship, too!

One Server Outage

One of the servers, on which the client terminals and Expert Advisors of the Championship Participants are working, failed last Saturday. For this reason 20 Expert Advisors did not work on Monday. All Expert Advisors have become able to continue their competition by 12 a.m. on Tuesday.
